The Disposable God, In a Godless Society

Last night was one of the rare times my wife was in bed before me. She always reads before shutting the light out to go to sleep. As I was rising from my knees after prayer, my eyes caught hers peering at me over the top of her reading glasses. She was gazing at me with jaw dropped…as if I had two heads. “What are you doing?” she asked me. “Praying.”, I replied. “ON YOUR KNEES?” she asked. “Yes…its how I was taught to pray.” I responded, now feeling a slight bit defensive.

So here we are. We’ve known each other for 22 years, lived together for 8, married for 5 and my wife has never seen me on my knees praying before now. Weird huh? But it gets weirder! My wife sits on the board of her temple as the co-chair of the Torah School and I consider myself to be very spiritual in my being…though I am not a church-goer.

The fact of the matter is that since I attended the “Restoring Honor Rally” on August 28th in Washington, I have re-established a practice I had long ago abandoned…praying on my knees. So my wife and I are sharing this very surreal moment of discovery in our bed and I am a little taken aback by her strange “recoil” at the sight of my kneeling in prayer. It was so strange in fact, that I actually said to her, “Do you REALLY believe in God?”

This actually brought me back to one night over the Summer. We had some musician friends over to the house to practice, followed by dinner. As the food was served and just before we began to eat, our friend David reached for the hands next to him and offered to say the blessing! I thought to myself, “How wonderful!”…and “Why is it WE don’t do this anymore?”

In her wonderful piece A Disposable Society Disposes of its Poor, Djelloul Marbrook  takes aim at the politicians, capitalists, the tea party & rabid consumerism as the ones most responsible…or indifferent to the plight of the poor.  http://www.djelloulmarbrook.com/2010/11/24/a-disposable-society-disposes-of-its-poor/

But in reality, aren’t the politicians just being politicians, the capitalists just being capitalists and the poor just being…poor? “What’s really missing?” I thought to myself. And then I realized I had just written a piece, “The Greatest Omission in the World” which contained the answer (credit to Ms. Publius Huldah). In  Do Our Rights Come From God, The Constitution, The Supreme Court or Congress? Ms. Huldah writes, “The future of our Posterity depends on a proper understanding of the Source of our Rights.” http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/29383  Her quote begs the question, “Do WE have a proper understanding of the Source of our Rights?? How in the world could we?

If an American President 40 or 50 years ago had recited the “inalienable rights” passage of the Declaration of Independence, leaving out ENDOWED BY OUR CREATOR not once but on three or four separate occasions, what would have been the Publics’ reaction? What would have been the response of The Press? Today, this President omits with intention and there is barely a whisper. This is like throwing a party for the guest of honor and not inviting…the guest of honor! Leaving these four words out of the most significant, history-making document of all time is like writing a book on the Combustion Engine…and omitting the carburetor!! How is this possible? WHY??

Ms. Huldah writes, “The only writing The Hard Left hates as much as the Bible is Our Declaration of Independence.”

So I sit on the bed with my wife in this sort of parallel universe of dueling realities. On the one hand God is in our lives as much as is acknowledged and very much brought to life in the blessed teachings of Rabbi Loeb…and just as passionately I’m sure, by many other clergymen across our country. But on the other hand, we have “energetically” stuffed God in the closet and buried him in the Dump of our daily lives. We have certainly evicted (him) from the public square…which ironically is the site of our greatest decay! A decay I might add, that Djelloul describes as accurately as I’ve ever read.

What if the “voice” from the Dump that Ms. Marbrook has been drawn to is actually God wanting back into our daily lives…as the guest of honor? What if we really did bring (him) back as the star of the show…instead of some understudy that we wheel on and off the stage?

What if?
