What Have I Done?

The very last word’s uttered by Alec Guinness’s character Colonel Nicholson in David Lean’s Bridge on the River Kwai, as he realizes in the last instant of his life…the greatest mistake of his life. What Have I done?

I sometimes wonder if David Lean, my absolute favorite Director of all time, had a very powerful looking-glass beyond the lens of the movie camera. When I think of the essence of his three greatest films, Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago and Bridge on the River Kwai, I see the present day as clearly as it seems he must have. We have Arab uprising, Revolution and Blind Allegiance playing out on the real world stage by mostly bad actors following mostly evil Directors…and it makes me wonder;

How in the world can we sit in a movie theater, follow and comprehend the mind-numbing twists and turns of a movie like Inception and yet be completely oblivious to the plot of the very simple and straight-forward movie we’re actually starring in ourselves? Especially when we’ve all seen the same movie before?

Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street and the Blind following the Incompetent! It is beyond eerie…it is purely horrifying to see the world stage set with precisely the same dynamic conditions that precipitated the darkest chapter in the twentieth century! The sudden ascension to power by a Machiavellian and duplicitous leader consolidating power by ginning, scapegoating, dividing and setting the people against one another! Severe political and economic upheaval leading to rising commodity prices and unemployment! The propping up of agitators and anarchists while silencing true dissent! The State control of Media and Crony Capitalism!

How many times have we heard people say, and said ourselves looking back on the pure evil that manifested itself during Hitler’s rise to power, “How could the German people have allowed this to happen? How could they not have seen this coming?” Well when people are out of work, hungry and demoralized they tend to lend an ear to the promise of jobs, food and…hope and change! I would also ask you how are the Obama Youth Corp, Code Pink, AFL-CIO, SEIU, ACORN, NEA, AARP and today’s Democratic Party any different from the Hitler Youth (HJ), League of German Girls (BdM), German Workers Front (DAF), National Socialist People’s Welfare (NSV) and the various Professional Organizations that served very effectively as Hitler’s propaganda arms?

But these associations in and of themselves would not have been enough to move the human spirit to relinquish control and unspeakable atrocity. No, there always needs to be a singularly powerful and galvanizing ingredient, tailored specifically to the heart of the individual and the masses! For Hitler, it was German Pride. For Colonel Saito it was the Bridge. For the Obama Regime, it is the nature of the liberal heart and Compassion!

The German people did not wake up in time…48 million people died! Colonel Nicholson woke up in the last second of his life to fall on the detonator which blew up the very bridge he built…saving untold allied lives. History awaits the Liberal American. All ears bend to hear the inevitable utterance, “What have I done?” One question remains…will it be too late?

    Chip – In my youth, I could not conceive of how the Germans could elevate Hitler to power and allow him to perpetuate such atrocities. That is, until I began to see it all unfold here in America, right down to the current resurgence of anti-Semitism. I’ve tried to do everything an ‘average Joe’ could do to sound the alarm – Talk to friends, family and acquaintances; write letters and make phone calls to elected officials; work on and donate to campaigns of folks I felt were worthy; join a 9/12 group; participate in and sometimes even plan tea party gatherings. I’ve tried to overcome my public school ‘re’-education and learn the true history of America, her founders and the Constitution. I’ve been told that the left-leaning folks in my circle don’t even attempt to argue or discuss our current situation with me, because they know I’m well-armed with the facts BUT they still can’t bring themselves to open their eyes and admit to the happenings around them. So it has come to this: I am trying to spend more time and effort preparing my family for the worst, and I pray fervently that God will be merciful on all his children. The time has come to keep the faith and put on the full armor of God.

    Thanks for a great comment Wendy! I and many others relate more than you know. We all must find our own way here. There are none so blind as those who WILL not see. And they aren’t about to see the world any differently through “our” eyes. BUT, I have found that people will ultimately recognize and follow “truth”…when it pops to the surface in “their” eyes. We just need to be patient and honor our own committment to it. That in and of itself will bring it closer…People are waking up…and part of that is to be there for them when they do, as well as preparing for ourselves now. God Bless you my friend!
