Independence Day 2017

When they said sit down, I stood up!

Yesterday when I went down to the kitchen to make coffee, I noticed two issues of Time Magazine. The first was the May 1, May 8, 2017 “100 Most Influential People” with singer John Legend on the cover. The second was May 29, 2017 with the White House morphing into the Kremlin on the front cover. Then, with coffee mug in hand, I came back upstairs to discover and read one of my favorite TCT author’s “On Change”. It inspired me to go back downstairs for another cup of coffee, to find the same Time Magazine May “100 Most Influential People”…only this time is 1953.

We don’t need a degree in Sociology or Anthropology to examine the two publications side by side, and learn all we need to know about who we were, who we’ve become, and what has gone so very terribly wrong. The sea of change separating Harry Belafonte covering John Legend and Senator Gillibrand covering Linda Sarsour from pages that exuded honor, courage and integrity covering people like Eisenhower or Sir Edmund Hillary is a galaxy so far, far beyond heartbreaking…known as totally unsustainable and completely unacceptable. Yesterday we climbed mountains to find our greater selves. Today, in any issue of the magazine whose parent company sponsored the depiction suggestion of President Trump’s assassination night after night, we climb over pages of pop-culture/social-engineering rubbish to sink to frightening new levels of the hell beneath ourselves.

Still, I’m an optimist. You can put me down and shut me out, but you can never keep me down or count me out. They will burn all the copies of Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer that ever existed, and ban all the flags and monuments ever erected, only to discover Clemens and the South did not live on pages or exist in marble…they live quite securely in our hearts. One would think that those foolish enough to do the burning and the banning would know this about us. But, as Fr. Schall so wisely acknowledges, the more things change…

Happy Independence Day to you and yours:

God Bless America!

  1. D. says:

“When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.” (Proverbs 29:2) I am still rejoicing over the election. I prayed for Pres. Trump, Vice-President Pence and all the good people that surround him this Independence Day. I am an optimist too.
