The Sunday Morning Tune-up ~ The Doctor Is In

Our Special Place

Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass. He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; do not fret—it only causes harm. For evildoers shall be cut off; but those who wait on the Lord, they shall inherit the earth. ~ Psalm 37:3-9

Do you ever feel like you need a therapist? If so, then Psalm 37 is for you. David writes as a counselor, providing wise steps to take as you face crises and decisions. I read these words and the preceding excerpt from Psalm 37 in my Leadership Promises for Every Day John C. Maxwell daily devotional, “The Doctor Is In”…the very next day after reading these:

I’m having a mental and emotional breakdown today.  I feel Armageddon approaching, I’m not ready, and I just don’t know what to do or where to go. ~ A friend

As Thomas Paine wrote in the days leading up to our last Revolution, “These are the times that try men’s souls.” As true today as they were over two hundred and forty years ago, when he wrote men’s souls, he meant everyone. So, one might ask, if everyone is tried what difference does it make whether I choose to believe and trust in myself, or believe and trust in God? Because not everyone comes through the trial the same. Some fare better, and some fare worse. And I believe an objective view of world history proves those who follow the Good Doctor’s advice are of the former.

There isn’t a scientific or scholarly mind on the planet that can prove to me that there is a single word in the most printed, published, and read book in the entire world that isn’t so. And I have spent more time reading, studying, and marveling the Word of God, so aptly referred to as the sword of the Spirit in Ephesians 6:17 since being saved in September 2015, than any other!

The stage is being set, as my pastor wrote in today’s devotional preparation, The stage for our Savior’s promised and glorious return is rapidly and visibly being set right before our eyes, with new developments every day in the light of Biblical truth!  The telescope of prophetic Scripture has zeroed in, as never before, on the most important land and city in the world, namely Israel and Jerusalem!  Notwithstanding the importance of all nations and people, and the unprecedented gravity of prophesied world conditions, we as God’s redeemed ones are to rejoice in the midst of deep lamentation over the present condition of mankind!

One of the things that never ceases to amaze me is how many different testimonies and experiences people have of coming to the Lord. For myself it seems, though seeking Him my entire life, it took a dance with the devil to convince me of His presence in my life…while others are scooped up without ever having to stray. But think on this my brothers and sisters, what is it the great evil now being flushed out of darkness and into the light of day fears MOST?

When I think about my life…the joy I find in every single day on this side of that day in September of 2015 I am brought to tears of gratitude, and hope that my worst enemy could find the very same. I woke up one morning this week in the transformational Word of Genesis 32:28 in Jacob’s “struggle with man and God” and prevailing to become Israel. And Moses ordered by God to send out the twelve to spy out the very land He promised them in Numbers 13:1—14:45, to know, understand, and believe in my heart that the very same God who sent Joshua and Caleb sends me to conquer the same fears. The same morning He told me to take my father’s old bible to our special place to read the very passage that happened to be that morning’s A Psalm & Proverb a Day Drives The Tyrant Away…Proverb 1. I had not touched my Dad’s Bible in years because of its age and frailty, I keep it locked away. When I got down to the pond I found the purple ribbon place marker set at Proverb 1, and letter inserted in the pages I had never seen or been aware of written by Pastor Downey of Furman Methodist Church in Syracuse NY and mailed to the “Furman Boys” fighting to save the world from tyranny in 1944. Bill Watrous, my favorite uncle, was married to my Dad’s sister.

The Good Doctor’s prescription is the very same today as it was for the “Furman Boys” feeling the same Armageddon approaching them as we feel now. I took the liberty of highlighting the fact that we are told to trust and not fret twice in seven verses, and importance of committing and need for patience and the fact that God provides for the desires of our heart, not the desires of our mind. In other words, God answers prayer not on our terms, but on His because He knows better than we know ourselves, what is ultimately best for us.
