The Sunday Morning Tune-up ~ November 16, 2014

“Fecisti nos ad te, Domine, et inequietum est cor nostrum, donec requiescat in te” (For Thou hast made us for Thyself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee) ~ St. Augustine, The Confessions

There is a lot to be said for just living life…in fact they’ve made up sayings around it. Nike’s “Just do it!” and Lennon’s “Life is what happens while we’re busy making other plans.” are but two that would seem to encourage less thought and more action. I’m completely OK with that…especially if it earns me a Nike endorsement because of my golf swing. What if I had applied Tiger-like discipline and focus to my songwriting at an early age?

I discovered something very interesting in reading The Soul of a Lion. I discovered that Dietrich von Hildebrand and I share a great deal in common. Many athletic, entertainment and service professionals make our world a better place (some by intention) as a part of their chosen profession…and some with the wealth their profession has provided them. Our conversation in the Secular World would end right here. I’d love to teach the world to sing…yada, yada, yada. But throughout all of history, how many of life’s Masters have whistled by the death camps in their process of living?

According to von Hildebrand’s “greatest influence” as revealed in the quote above; we are not here to just do it, make other plans, hit the longest drive, or make the world a better place. We are here to be the physical experience of our Creator! The simple essence of this Truth is the final tumbler’s click in the eternal vault of wisdom. This one fact alone explains humility, charity, and true martyrdom (sans virgins). It is the well-spring of the Christian Heart. Something our secularist friends would like very much to remain sealed in the vault! Good Sunday Morning Dear Friend! 🙂

Why am I here?

He was deeply saddened to know that many Christians tried to “adapt” their faith to secular norms. ~ Alice von Hildebrand writing about her husband.

Alice was writing here, at page 206, at the time (1929) her husband was witnessing the separation of grain from chaff…true Christian from Christian in name only as men fell under the spell of the Reich. “The dynamism of ideas that are ‘in the air’ is such that most people are carried away by it, without even being conscious of how influenced they are by its siren song.” Sound familiar? That’s because we are living the exact same spiritual phenomenon at this very moment in time!

I the Preacher have been king over Israel in Jerusalem. And I applied my mind to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven; it is an unhappy business that God has given to the sons of men to be busy with. I have seen everything that is done under the sun; and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind.~ Ecclesiastes 1:12-14

Society purged of Truth is like grain from nutrient-depleted soil. In time people become starved. But fear not good people…because the Candy Man can! There were plenty of sweets for von Hildebrand’s peers to “adapt” to. Just like we have Common Core to replace Truth and Monsanto to replace His nutrient! Until after a while as the Preacher informs us, had anyone cared to listen…we are only eating wind.

This is why the greatest quality I look for in my fellow man is authenticity. Many have learned to act the part and mask it well, but no one can fool a soul in the state of Grace. Tragically, we learned what happened to Europe after so many shepherds departed the wisdom of St. Augustine and chose to be the great pretenders instead. The German Bishops folded like the cheap suits they were! Perhaps even more tragically for us is how these lessons are lost on the Cardinal Timothy Dolans of our time! 😦

Could the Evil of Hitler manifested had the shepherds held their ground?

I would like to thank each and every one who prayed for me this past week, sent me cards, text and emailed, stacked my wood, called to wish me well on behalf of their congregations and delivered delicious fruit baskets! I have something I’d like to get off my chest…You didn’t build that! God made that happen! And I truly love you for it!
